Seminars: Attention Deficit Disorder: Moral Politics of Inattention
Start Date/Time: 6/4/2018 4:00 PM
End Date/Time: 6/4/2018 5:00 PM
Location: Alumni Hall B
Description: Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) gets less scientific and social attention than its hyperactive/impulsive compatriot, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In this talk, I am fundamentally concerned with the following question: Is it right to use psychotropic medication to treat ADD? To achieve an answer, I combine a review of the social history of AD/HD diagnosis with data from a contemporary study of 152 young people that focused on the social and ethical dimensions of AD/HD diagnosis and treatment. I will argue that ADD symptomatology needs to be understood in its social context, and that treatment decisions need to take seriously the moral experiences and expressed values of young people.
