Seminars: Breathing Matters
Start Date/Time: 12/18/2017 4:00 PM
End Date/Time: 12/18/2017 5:00 PM
Location: Alumni Hall B
Description: We must, and do, breathe without significant interruption from birth to death. Breathing comes naturally, effortlessly in health at rest; in addition to moving air, breathing coordinates with orofacial behaviors and strongly influences, and is influenced by, emotion and cognition. Key neural elements for generating breathing pattern, e.g., preBotzinger Complex (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03j049b ), are distinct, compact, and form a coupled-oscillator network amenable to detailed interrogation, promising the imminent discovery of molecular, cellular, and synaptic mechanisms that give rise to the behavior. No matter your interest as a neuroscientist, my talk should convince you that BREATHING MATTERS!
